The formula for those with an eGFR over 35 is also suitable for anyone interested in prevention of CKD. Supporting a healthy pH and reducing the acid load on your kidneys is essential for anyone, and the nutrients, antioxidants, and phytochemicals in this formula can help to keep your kidneys healthy.
In Stages 4‒5 of CKD, or when your eGFR is under 35, high doses of magnesium should be avoided. When kidney functionality is low, there is a risk that your magnesium levels may become too high.
Sodium bicarbonate taken orally is an effective alternative to magnesium as an alkalizing agent. Studies show that bicarbonate therapy slows the decline in kidney function in more advanced CKD and in the presence of metabolic acidosis.
Bicarbonate is widely accepted as the therapy of choice for restoring pH balance in later stages of kidney functionality.
As a supplement, sodium bicarbonate can cause some gastrointestinal discomfort, such as gas or bloating.
Your doctor should also monitor you for edema and hypertension because of the sodium. The Alkalizing Formula includes ingredients that act as diuretics and anti-hypertensives to offset the effects of sodium bicarbonate.

There is a misconception that you can’t take vitamin C if you are at risk of kidney stones. This myth arose out of an assumption that has largely been discredited by research.
Vitamin C is one of the most studied nutrients and is backed by the highest volume of clinical trials. We have an overwhelming body of evidence that vitamin C is highly safe for general use and for those with kidney damage.
Large-scale human trials conducted over 14+ years demonstrated that vitamin C does not increase kidney stones. In our extensive research, we have yet to see a study that shows vitamin C causes kidney stones. In fact, some studies suggest that vitamin C may actually decrease kidney stones.
We would only err on the side of caution in using vitamin C if you have very high oxalates and compromised liver function. Even then, we would recommend vitamin C immediately after getting your liver function back up.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is eliminated from the body daily and must be replaced daily.
